John W. Mauck

Education
In 1969 I graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Economics, and then earned a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1972.

Professional Experience
Since 1985, I have had the opportunity to focus my practice on defending churches and religious organizations in the area of land use, and how free exercise of religion and other constitutional freedoms impact zoning laws. The Lord has allowed me to act as a legal advisor to hundreds of churches, Pastors and denominations. In 1998, I testified before Congress concerning the zoning problems of churches, and originated and helped design the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Person Act of 2000. In 2001, Rich Baker and I started Mauck & Baker which currently has 7 attorneys (all CLS members!) In 2004 and 2005, I have been able to undertake cases supporting academic freedom of a professor to defend Israel, and the freedom of conscience for a pharmacist not to dispense morning after pills.

Family
My wife, Rosemary, and I celebrated our 33rd anniversary this year. We have four adult children, and we live in Evanston, IL. In 2001, the Lord enabled me to write Paul On Trial:  The Book of Acts as a Defense of Christianity which was published by Thomas Nelson. It explains Roman law and procedures and uncovers the legal/political/religious conflict which caused Luke to write Acts. I have been privileged to teach on Acts on many radio and television programs and in churches, seminaries and Bible colleges.

CLS Involvement & Related Experience
I have been a part of CLS since 1983, and have enjoyed many benefits from being a member such as networking with other believers to create a Christian lawyer referral network (Ps. 1:1). I have also been able to attend the annual conference for ten or twelve of the years I have been a member and have taught conference seminars twice. Our CLS Loop Group meets monthly where I have had the opportunity to speak on occasion, and to encourage and be encouraged often.

My Vision for CLS
My current appreciation of CLS is as an organization of believers which can impart vision to other lawyers to build the Kingdom of God and impact the culture for Jesus through the practice of law. Christian discipleship, lawyer to lawyer and CLS to lawyer is one of the most effective ways, biblically, to accomplish this goal. The Holy Spirit is constantly at work in the lives of attorneys calling them to Jesus and calling them to become and make disciples. CLS needs to recognize where and how the Spirit is moving to do this and cooperate with that work.

I also anticipate that the more we clearly discern both our quotidian and transcendent roles as lawyers, the more effectively we will succeed in cooperating with the Lord. This requires CLS to wear contact lenses customized as my ophthalmologist, Dr. Spiegel, did for my 58 year old eyes: near sighted for one, far sighted for the other. The micro sees how our day to day work becomes ministry, a lifestyle we can each learn from and teach each other if we are intentional. The macro view requires sound eschatology lest we be found to hinder rather than support God’s work. Given the different lenses our faith communities fit us with, CLS will and must continue to be challenged on the big picture purposes for its existence.
